Painted Wings

She turned the water on and slowly took her clothes off, stepping into the steaming water and letting the droplets pelt against her skin. She closed her eyes and let out a long breath. She knew that Lexi and Kelly were sorry they forgot her birthday. She knew they would regret it for the rest of their lives. She wasn’t sad that they forgot. She was sad because she wished things were different. She wished that it wasn’t such a big deal that they forgot because it might be her last birthday. She wished that she wasn’t sick and in the hospital and forced to think about what day it was because it was the only thing she could do that didn’t take any energy out of her. She wished that she could rewind the year and start all over and change everything.
