Up Jumped the Devil

REX McBRIDE, private detective, tough, handsome and always responsive to female loveliness, lands in San Francisco in connection with the theft of a hundred thousand dollars worth of jewelry that has been insured by one of his clients. Right away he finds a corpse in his room, a string of red herrings across his path and plenty of trouble from all angles, including his wealthy client's hellraking young wife and younger adopted daughter. A Los Angeles citizen, Rex McBride expects something less than the fest of treatment in San Francisco. He gets it, and before he can date anybody he is handling the jewel case with his left hand and with his right trying to clear himself of successive murder charges by solving the murders.
