A boy named Himm and his two friends, Shimdee and Tisch, leave their village of Ispour for the journey of a lifetime. A new king of Caysadon is to be chosen and he must be a twelve year old boy from Ispour. The test of the Circle of Pillars is just the beginning of an adventure that will take the three friends on a race against others on the Trail of Tears to be the first to reach the emperor’s throne where the winner is to be crowned king. There is danger all the way, but the three have the help of a wise old man named Mingisbar and a mysterious companion who came to be known as Shadowfriend.
