Some capabilities stay invisible to the very people carrying them. Not because they're absent. Managing them long enough turns into a habit so automatic it erases the self-knowledge along with the behaviour. A person can spend years being the one who sees the connection first, or reads a room before anyone speaks, or moves before the plan is ready, and still not recognise it as something they do, only as something that keeps getting them in trouble. The Friction Journal is a workbook built on a simple, testable idea: one hard moment proves nothing. The same pattern showing up across a work deadline, a family disagreement, and an unrelated hobby is evidence. Recognition comes from what recurs, not from any single incident. Structured around eight talents, Integrative Thinking, Deep Focus, Cognitive Dexterity, Creative Implementation, Strategic Empathy, Embodiment, Emotional Intelligence and Regulation, and Adaptive Masking, each chapter opens with a short retelling, followed by a plain-language research note, five reflection questions, the conditions that talent needs to function well, real role models, and concrete exercises grounded in named sources. This is not a diagnostic tool, and it doesn't sort readers into types. It asks a different question: not what's wrong, but what's costly to carry without language for it, and what changes once that language exists, for the person carrying it and for the people working alongside them. The retelling in each chapter is a short, workbook-length version, written for reflection rather than reading. The full fables live in the companion volume, Fables for Exceptional Times: https://www.lulu.com/shop/deepak-mehta/fables-for-exceptional-times/hardcover/product-454kr2k.html. The two are meant to be read in sequence: FableBook and then Friction Journal. Available now, ahead of formal publication.
