Kurt must explain a father significant in his life by his absence alone. With no accurate details but his own - sketchy memories gathered as a ten year old boy - together with the taciturn remembrances of an indifferent mother and variously impressionable family members, Kurt has drafted, redrafted and then drafted again... Now, in the midst of an alcoholic town, with nothing to do but force fish into tiny boxes, his father is finally demanding definition... Nicola. The returning daughter of the town has a way about her. Seven in fact. Living sections of her life over and over, Nicola battles a perfectionist zeal for living an 'ideal story'; trying to settle for living the best she can. Seven versions of the same thing...seven paths, seven bites of the same cherry... The narrator has been working hard, very hard...psychotically hard...and yes, there is such a thing.
