The Age of Innocence is a 1920 novel by Edith Wharton. The work won for her a Pulitzer Prize in fiction that same year. The novel is set in the middle and upper classes of 1870s Old New York. Newland Archer, a lawyer set to enter into a marriage with the seemingly naïve but beautiful May Welland, must re-consider his choice with the intrusion of recently divorced Countless Ellen Olenska, May's cousin.
