When Abajon, a Negroe farmhand, falls for Ananya, the Indian woman, he will do anything to have her.
Ultimately denied, he runs to Washington, where he meets Timothy Webster. Together, they discover a political landscape full of growing consequence.
As Timothy joins with the Federalists to protect his identity, Abajon returns to Staunton and begins working with the Labor Council, a secret organization attempting to find a peaceful end to the fighting.
As Reconstruction settles in after the war, Abajon returns to the farmhouse, where things are changing. Ex-soldiers are returning from the war. Negroes without means are packing the town.
Attempts to control the chaos swing from the Negroe advocacy of James Beckett to the White supremacy of the Klu Klux Klan.
And, they are left with decades of Segregation.
