This book aims to present an elaboration of the understanding of "capital's structural crisis" in István Mészáros, distinguishing it from other Marxist approaches that seek to explain the crisis of late capitalism. Mészáros transcends conventional explanations grounded solely in a series of causalities tied to the capitalist mode of production, such as overproduction, underconsumption, intersectoral disproportions, or even declines in the rate of profit (including their potential cumulative effects). While not disregarding these structural causalities, Mészáros proposes a more encompassing framework grounded in the concept of the socio-metabolic control mode. By distinguishing between first-order and second-order mediations, he differentiates capital as a system of socio-metabolic control from the traditional understanding of capitalism as a mode of production.
