Displacement Blues

In Displacement Blues, the author recalls that one day in late 1941 or early 1942 his mother, Anna, for no reason he could comprehend, dropped him off with a Christian Belgian family who had agreed to take him in and hide him from the occupying Nazis. For the author's safety, he was required to hide in a coal cellar whenever the doorbell rang and could return to the living quarters only when a coded whistle announced that it was safe to return.
