Since the publication in 2017 of Ian Rotherham's book ‘Shadow Woods – A Search for Lost Landscapes’ the ideas and thoughts rooted in the volume have been well-received and have had some influence in the emerging enthusiasm for Atlantic Forests and Temperate Rainforests. Moreover, there has been considerable new work and emerging insights in the nearly ten years since the text was written. This expanded version is updated and broadened in scope following numerous discussions and opportunities to present the ideas at innumerable meetings and conferences. This is now Volume No. 2 in our Wildtrack Publishing series – ‘The Woodland Heritage Series’, volume 1 being ‘The New Locust Years - Trouble in the Woods & the destruction of ancient woodland heritage in the UK’ (2025).
