Muckross Abbey: A History

Muckross Abbey (more properly a friary) in Killarney, Co Kerry, today a picturesque ruin, was founded in the fifteenth century by the MacCarthy family. This concise history was written at the end of the nineteenth century by Franciscan Fr Jarlath Prendergast of Killarney Friary. He hoped to publish his history in book form but died before this could be accomplished. His work, reproduced with introduction, notes and photographs, incorporates the foundation, restoration, architecture and monuments in the abbey, with the family histories of Holeni, MacCarthy, O’Sullivan, Egan, O’Connor Kerry, O’Donoghue, O’Rourke, O’Falvey, O’Callaghan and O’Keeffe.
