Experimental Designs using Excel

One of the obstacles to testing a classified system under test (SUT) is the limited availability of analysis software. However, we often overlook the one “constant” across various classified computing platform, Microsoft Excel (or similar spreadsheet app). Excel is “everywhere” and we underestimate its capability of performing advanced statistical modeling and analysis. I have used Excel extensively in the field of operations research, operational testing, and modeling and simulation. I authored a book on the mathematical modeling of combat and other military operations using Excel exclusively, from direct fire Lanchester equations to Kolmogorov differential equations for attrition. Others have authored books that use Excel for management science, statistical analysis, and operations research. In this book, I demonstrate Excel’s capability to implement experimental designs and analysis. I use combat system examples for testing with full factorial designs, randomized complete blocked designs (RCBD), Lartin Squares, ART ANOVA, sample size computation, regression, follow-up and post ANOVA tests, Dunnett’s ad hoc test, Kruskal-Wallis H test, Tukey HSD Test, and more. I present over 40 applied examples including orbital element analysis, (two-line element set), WD-40 experimental testing, O-ring pressure tolerance, radiation degradation, space debris, satellite control, and more.
