A botched move to southern California after high school marked the end of a long and flimsy relationship for Irwin. In the wake of the failure, he bolted north to San Francisco and took a job as a transcriptionist for an insurance company. His job and his living situation led him to believe that the odds were unfairly stacked against him -- as if his path was peppered with more obstacles than the paths of his peers. That's when he befriended Lester Humphrey, initiating a friendship that would ultimately get both of them fired.
