Welcome to the Wesleyan Tradition—a lively, occasionally unruly, and always Spirit-breathing stream in the broad river of Christian theology. Rooted in the life, sermons, schemes, and spiritual fire of John Wesley (1703–1791), this tradition has never been content to sit quietly in the pews. It has always had one eye on the heavens and the other on the streets, tugging theology down into everyday life with both tenderness and tenacity. At its best, the Wesleyan way is a curious cocktail of evangelical zeal, sacramental depth, practical piety, and holy ambition. It's not just about getting your soul saved (though that matters); it’s about sanctification—what Wesley called being “made perfect in love”—and doing something useful with it. Whether through field preaching, class meetings, circuit riding, or digital discipleship, this tradition has always insisted that holiness is meant to be lived out loud. This course invites you to take a deep dive into Wesleyan theology, spirituality, and practice—not just as a museum exhibit of revival history, but as a living, evolving conversation. We'll trace the tradition’s origins in the 18th-century Anglican world, follow its fiery Holiness revivals, and watch it stretch, grow, and stumble its way into the global landscape of the 21st century. Along the way, we’ll encounter core questions: What does it mean to be saved? What is grace doing before we even know it? Can love really be made perfect in a messy world? Expect to wrestle with the famous Wesleyan Quadrilateral—Scripture, tradition, reason, and experience—not as a theological checklist but as a way of seeing, discerning, and living. We'll also explore how this tradition has tackled big issues: poverty, justice, race, women’s leadership, spiritual experience, and the ethics of holiness in public life. This isn’t just a study in history or doctrine (though we’ll do that too). It’s an invitation to theological imagination: to see how lived grace can transform individuals, communities, and maybe even systems. You’ll meet fiery revivalists and gentle mystics, social reformers and eccentric prophets—all animated by the conviction that love is the point, and the Spirit is still on the move. So, bring your questions. Bring your scepticism. Bring your coffee. This course is a journey—not to tame the Wesleyan tradition, but to travel with it. And if we’re paying attention, we might just find that holiness still has boots on the ground and fire in the heart.
