This book comes from two journeys to Iceland—the first my voyage in mind while reading sagas in my youth (Burnt Njal, Læxdala, Auðun and the Bear), and the second a pilgrimage in later years to be on the shore of an Icelandic fjord on midsummer day in 2022. From the first came a hunger to see the place, and by the second that hunger’s run of satisfactions all along the Ring Road around the island: from Reykjavík to Eyrarfjallsvegur, along Snæfellsnes peninusula to Grundarfjörður, north to Blönduós, to the herring port of Siglufjörður, across barren lands to remote Skjoldolfsstaðir, far Berunes, to Kirkjubæjar, then Hvolsvöllur, and back again to Reykjavík.
