The story is of a young man who grew up in London at the end of the 12th century, and was told his brother had been killed at Hattin, the disaster that concluded the Second Crusade. Determined his brother can not be dead Martin wishes to seek for him, but is told he is too young at fourteen and should instead train for the Church at Oxford.
