This autobiographical story is part personal, part cultural time capsule. It humorously captures the experience of serving as a medic in the South African Defence Force (SADF) during the final years of the Border War era, but from a very different angle. This is mainly for those who weren't there, but are perhaps curious about life in uniform at the end of Apartheid, and also a window into what Apartheid meant for us at the time. This is a snapshot of two years compressed into a couple of pages filled with basic training, suture needles, plaster casts and bombing ranges, growing up, life in uniform, the art of invisibility, ER, boredom, frustration, and dozens of memories filtered through three decades of hindsight with a heap of South African wit and the occasional moment of clarity. You'll learn about: *The daily life of an SADF medic in the late 1980s *Army culture, from spittle-flecked “uitkak” sessions to fifty push-ups in 30°C heat *The mix of pride, confusion, and resentment that came with compulsory service *Some South African history *The stereotypes and criticism medics faced — and what the maroon beret really meant I didn't make it to the border warzone, as the title implies, but I had two years as a guest of the South African government, enjoying all of their finest hospitality. So, we'll explore how that went in a lighthearted way, because that is what kept us going, and at the end, we will try to make sense of it all in a time when young men had to do their duty towards their country. And it wasn't by choice; they had to go whether they wanted to or not. So, what did we learn? Did we enjoy it? Or was it a waste of time?
