Get on the Bus

Get on the Bus is a short story told from the perspective of a 10 year old who is always the one seeking answers. Anel, a precocious child, knows something has gone wrong before her sister tells her; she and her siblings are latchkey kids living in public housing with their mother. When her brother tarries in inclement weather, the family is visited by an unconscionable, yet probable act. Probable because when African Americans ventured beyond their close knit communities in the 1960s, oftentimes they were met with inhospitable and sometimes hateful reactions.
