Like his detective agency Harry Hedge is in the doldrums. He is overweight and the leg injury he sustained in The Falklands is playing him up.His attempts to get fit at the local health club is not working and when he meets Barbara Colquhoun to discuss her missing husband it seems to be just another marital dispute.
