What happens in Ides? There is a murder. There is a letter, or a series of letters, sent from the narrator to himself on the ides of the month, which he can’t remember writing, and which purport to tell the future of his life. There is a Collective. Attempting to chart the history of this Collective, a secret political group apparently set up by himself, the main narrator of Ides – who may or may not be called Robert Rocinante – is instead continually distracted by his need to describe one moment occurring (naturally) on the fifteenth of March. Unfortunately, the narrator suffers from some form of sickness (he suspects schizophrenia), and the exact nature of this moment eludes him. Is it a meeting between two lovers? Is it the day he and the female ‘other’ of his story set up the Collective? Is it the day he murdered her? Or did she commit suicide? Or was everything a lie, and in fact she had already killed him? The only thing we know for sure is that we know nothing...
