Nala the Literacy Chihuahua is a gentle, heartwarming picture book about a beloved school dog and the community that adapts around her as she grows older.
Nala loves visiting her school, listening to stories, and spending time with the children. As she gets older, her eyesight begins to fade, and she sometimes bumps into things or has trouble seeing the stairs and the words in books. Instead of leaving her out, the students and teachers work together to make the school safer and more comfortable for her: they add bright yellow tape to the edges of the stairs, make the text in her books larger, and create cozy reading spots where she can listen and feel included.
Throughout the story, Nala continues to come to school, wagging her tail and enjoying read-aloud time with her friends. The children learn to slow down, be patient, and think about what others need. In the end, Nala may not see as clearly with her eyes, but she “sees” with her heart, surrounded by a caring community that helps her stay safe and keep reading.
