LAPD Detective Beth "La Bruja" Herrera is back again, working with her partner Detective Frederick Kane. It's been almost two months since the Chameleon case in San Jose, and the two detectives are beginning to think it's going to be a slow summer until a local businessman is murdered in his car on the Fourth of July just a block away from the famed Venice (CA) canals. This new case takes them from the beach at Venice to Boston and New Hampshire as the detectives link separate crimes to a single weapon and travel to New England to solve the murder in California. The relationship between the two detectives has developed and begun to jell since they were first partnered in "Sorceress." This is the third in the series of novels about Det. Beth Herrera.
