Concerto for Percussion and Orchestra op. 11

Dramatic showcase for solo mallets. The first movement is a ritornello (allegro barbaro) for roto toms and large orchestra. The second movement, Romanza, for solo vibraphone and reduced orchestra, is a lush and melodic homage to Samuel Barber. The solo vibraphone weaves its way in and out of chamber ensemble combinations with solos in the orchestra. The first and last sounds of the solo are a slow bowed melody. The last movement is for five octave marimba and large orchestra. It is multi metered in alternating bars of 3/4 and 3/8 and features an accompanied cadenza which culminates in a frenzied improv passage. The scherzo was first performed in concert on February 22, 1997 in the New England Conservatory’s Brown Hall in Boston by percussionist Jeremy Friedman and members of the NEC Symphony Orchestra.
