Scott is the Commish of a tabletop simulation baseball league called the American Baseball League. Lenny Saaf is the yearbook author and editor of the encyclopedia. What is the ABL? The members of the American Baseball League (ABL) are baseball fans who compete against each other over the course of a simulated baseball season. Games are played using a board game. It’s similar to other strategic board games like Monopoly and Risk, but the subject in this case is baseball. The general name given to such baseball games is “tabletop baseball” or “dice baseball.”’ Various forms of tabletop baseball have been around almost as long as the sport itself, but the variety played by the ABL involves cards and dice, a format that was first introduced in the 1930s. Each card represents a real baseball player, and information printed on the card reflects the specific strengths and weaknesses of that player, as determined by the statistics from a real Major League Baseball season. A roll of the dice will typically indicate a play result on a player’s card, for example, a home run or a strikeout. The particular game used by the ABL is called Triple Play Baseball.
