His first book Midlothian at War, is a series of short stories detailing the contribution of the men and women of Midlothian, Scotland in two World Wars. His book With a Pick and Rifle, with many previously unpublished photographs, follows the 8th Royal Scots from its roots in the Volunteers, through its forced marriage of the 6th and 7th Volunteers in 1908, to emerge as the 8th Battalion (Territorial Force) Royal Scots, their service in the Great War of 1914-1918 and their subsequent disbandment after the war. His third publication was Only Remembered, a joint venture with David Adams, another local historian from Midlothian, an illustrated guide to the war memorials of the county and a section on those taken as prisoners of war. John's latest book Midlothian in World War Two tells the stories of the part that Midlothian servicemen played in the global conflict with many photos of local combatants. From the Arctic to the Pacific and everywhere in-between, Midlothian played its part.
