THEY CAME FROM RUSSIA and they came from Poland, They came from Latvia and Lithuania, from Romania from Hungary, from Austria, from Germany and from France.
The only link with the "Old Country" for each of these families starting a new life in the New World, were their recipes, These were the symbols and flavours of continuity and belonging; the link with the generations left behind and the heritage of those yet to be born.
Happily so many of those grandmothers and great-grandmothers wrote down the well remembered recipes that their own mothers and grandmothers had brought with them on those legendary boats from the old world. Florence Greenbaum collected thousands of these recipes from the tenemants of New York at the turn of the 20th century, and here at last is the definitive collection of how our grandmothers' grandmothers cooked for Passover.
