It's time for retailers to treat customers as their number one We begin this chapter by implementing our own advice, and discuss the single most important (but often overlooked) factor in retail success: the customer. We'd also like to begin by setting the precedent in this book to "don't overdo it," and "shine the spotlight" on some of the myths that still run rampant in the retail world. Retailers are always quick to say things like: “We put the customer first!” or “Customer is number one!” or “We provide excellent customer service!”. Admittedly, there hasn't been an annual report, a retailer's mission statement, or an official media message that we've read that doesn't contain great customer statements. The product is the most important part of the company. While such statements appear abundantly in annual reports and on retailer bulletin boards, it is unfortunately only a fantasy.
