In order to conquer his fear of bugs, Gregory K. becomes an exterminator, but his fears and failures only become more acute. His struggles drive him from Renee, his love, an uncompromising iconoclast facing equally repugnant career choices.
At his lowest point, Gregory lands a job at a posh hotel and falls under the spell of Anita, an ambitious, immigrant dishwasher, who introduces him to the high-stakes and violent world of underground cricket fighting. Ironically, to prove himself a greater cynic than Anita, Gregory transforms himself into an underworld kingpin, hosting cricket fights within the hotel's basement.
Only Renee can redeem Gregory, but she is relentlessly stalked by Skip, a young man whose crazy maneuvers are a manifestation of Gregory's existential struggles. At the Halloween Battle Royale, the stakes have never been higher for Gregory, Renee, Skip, and the gamblers. And, for months, no one’s been looking after the hotel's infestation.
