A simple 1933 Berlin Homicide Detective married to a Jewish wife and with half-Jewish children, is only half-willingly co-opted into the Gestapo and commits horrendous acts while rising to a concentration camp commander, terrified for his family and helping them escape from Germany through Istanbul to Shanghai.
