Every society has worshipped. Every society in history has had the overwhelming need to boast of its inferiority to something. The object worshipped has varied: the sun, the moon, imagined people, dead people, mountains… but the basic act of worship has been a constant feature of civilised society. A cult arises amongst the decaying inner city housing estates. It is led by a ruthlessly ambitious preacher, whose message is that the only way for humans to find happiness is by being good to others. To do this they need to suppress their instinct towards evil by feeling inferior to, as in worshipping, those rare people that are pure goodness, such as himself. A cult member is found savagely murdered. His picture is recognized by Jack, an unsuccessful lawyer with a casual ability at violence. Two years before the victim had persuaded his fiancée to join the cult. Finding an excuse to search for her but still carrying the humiliation caused by her departure, Jack attempts to enter the cult.
