Jane refuses to believe the rumours about her great Uncle, Lt Wilkins, and goes in search of Reverend Johnson the only man alive who knows why he was shot for desertion. Johnson is reticent at first but finally agrees to tell her the truth. But the truth, as Jane learns, is not quite as Johnson presents it and struggles to discover what he is hiding. "Dawn Shots" is a contemporary novel that raises questions about the justice of war and the place of hope in our society. It looks at the role of religion and asks the question: how does one deal with horrendous suffering.
