Charlie Stewart is staying with friends. They have been to a carnival dressed in period costume; Charlie as King Charles . On returning to Arnewood house they find themselves back in the 17th century.
Charlie saves the King’s life & is knighted. The civil war has ended & the King is being pursued by the army to put him on trial.He is taken to London, and put on trial where he is sentenced to death. Charlie & others loyal to the King follow to London hoping for a chance to stage a rescue. They are received by Thomas Gwyn, father of Nell, who introduces Roberts Boyle & Hooke, scientists.
Charlie proposes a rescue plan which entails changing places with the King and, effecting a rescue from the scaffold by means of a converted wooden cladded farm cart, powered by a group of Thomas Gwyns’ men inside the cart. Boyle and Hooke help by producing the cart and among other equipment a large hot air balloon made to look like the devil.
The plan goes wrong & Charlie’s life is threatened.
