Terence Lloyd-Harding brings us a female-led tale of how fantasy interacts with reality and vice-versa, as a City trader and former Dulwich College pupil wanders from the rural tranquillity of his Cornish walking-holiday onto a less beaten path that will certainly live up to the latter half of that description when he sees a sign for a village not mentioned on any of his maps. A sign, Vincent Carrick learns, that can only be seen by certain people and leads to a village by the name of "Croix de Besançon". A village run and governed by the iron-hand of women descended from the exodus made by Huguenot's centuries before, during the tyranny directed at those of their faith throughout the reign of the Sun-King himself. Women with certain controlling desires when it comes to the male the newcomer to their dreamlike midst is about to discover for himself when they insist that, despite his complete ignorance of them, that he was once a man of the village who absconded and will be dealt with accordingly. Terence Lloyd-Harding describes how we are not alone in the world and how those unseen dimensions running parallel to ours can sometimes meld one with the other. With, in this instance, lasting and draconian effects for the male on the wrong end of that melding.
