Hawa Evelyn Sherman Knuckles was a native of Grand Cape Mount County and a daughter of the Vai people of Liberia, West Africa. The third child of the late Varney Sherman and the late Virginia Sherman, both teachers, her siblings include John W.F. Sherman (deceased, 1980), G. Fole Sherman, Fred Sherman & Mietta Virginia Sherman White (deceased, 1989). Hawa passed away in December after a long battle with cancer. Hawa was the granddaughter of the famous Chief Feweh Sherman (Kiahon) of Bendu, Grand Cape Mount County. She was born in Robertsport and attained her early education at the House of Bethany Episcopal Mission School (where her father taught), the Monrovia Demonstration School and St. Teresa’s Convent. She graduated secondary school in 1963 from Suehn Industrial Academy in Bomi County. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Cuttington College, Liberia (1967) and her Masters of Arts degree in Librarianship from the University of Denver, U.S.A. (1970) Hawa married the late Willis D. Knuckles, Jr. They have four children: Hawa-Ellen, Willis III & his wife Marie, Ethel Virginia; and twograndchildren, Samuel Willis & Nala Myriam. She worked in the field of librarianship for over 30 years including working at the National Public Library (Liberia), J.J. Roberts United Methodist School (Liberia), Liberia Institute of Public Administration Library, United Nations Information Centre (Liberia), & Dag Hammarskjöld Library, UN Headquarters (New York, U.S.A.)
