Don Imus, on his syndicated show, poked an unjustified racist, sexist, slur at the Rutgers Women's Basketball Team. Rev. Jesse Jackson led the chage against Imus, resulting in the firing of Imus from his radio and TV shows. Imus said that "I am a good person who did a bad thing," much like the rest of us. Imus' statement epitomizes the state of American culture today. In the words of Barack Obama, the offending Imus statement reflects the “coarsening of our culture.” A cursory overview of the news brings into focus the shortcomings of virtually everyone in the news, and the war of words that creates problems for the famous and not so famous. Words can and do hurt. Use with caution. No one lies anymore. They only spin or misspeak, or repeat the lie often and loud, until the lie seems to be true, or at least the lie is true in the mind of the liar.
