In October 1996, Jerome “Jolly” Joseph, a thirty-year-old water-taxi operator from Bequia, disappeared after responding to a VHF radio call from the American yacht Carefree. Two days later, his body was found floating in the waters off Bequia.
Charged with his murder were James Fletcher and Penelia “Penny” Fletcher, an American couple whose case would place Saint Vincent and the Grenadines under intense international scrutiny. The trial drew powerful lawyers, major American media attention, diplomatic concern, allegations of corruption, and heated public debate over class, sovereignty, tourism, press power, and the limits of circumstantial evidence.
The Fletchers were eventually acquitted after the High Court ruled that there was no evidence, direct or indirect, that they had committed the act. Yet the death of Jerome “Jolly” Joseph remained unresolved.
The Quest for Justice Vol. 1: The Fletcher Trial is a documentary non-fiction account of one of the most controversial criminal cases in the modern history of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. It does not seek to retry the accused. Instead, it preserves the record, examines the legal and social issues surrounding the case, and returns Jerome “Jolly” Joseph to the centre of the story.
The trial ended.
The mystery did not.
Who shot Jolly Joseph?
