Reforms that were intended to stamp out the undue electoral influence of party bosses, harassment of voters at the polls, and rampant election fraud created a system of ballot regulations and election procedures that only a few decades later would provide the mechanisms by which the dominant Democratic and Republican political parties would eventually entrench themselves and their incumbents against independent and third party opposition.
