In this first of a trilogy, "Trial and Destiny I" opens in 1956 with a steel worker, named Reed Peters, making a third attempt of making it big as an egg farmer. However, Reed's business turns into a nightmare through his alcoholism and his brother LeRoy's unreliability.

At the same time, Duane's cousin Davey Perry and aunt Lisa Robbins become caught up in the fury of the 1960's.
