The Lantern Gate

Hidden City

Some cities keep secrets. Tokyo keeps a whole world. Eleven-year-old Miles Calloway came to Tokyo with one plan: survive a year far from home without being noticed. His little sister Madison had other ideas, starting with befriending shrine statues outside their tiny apartment. Then mysterious things start happening: the small fox that sits in the rain without getting wet, the persistent glowing aura, and the lantern drifting along the shrine wall with no hand to carry it. Ordinary people walk right past it. Miles and Madison can't, and the reason traces back to an ancestor no one in the family will talk about. All over the neighborhood, the gentle old spirits are going cold and vanishing. Something in the dark is causing them disappear, and the only two who can see it happening are the children who just arrived. The new kids can see what the city is trying to forget. The question is what it will cost them to look.
