Duplicity University – a scholar-spy symbiosis in cyberspace. Episode 8: Back in 1982 the first of Dr (almost) Ivor Jo’s favorite students nudges him into covert signals intelligence. Halima is a Druze from Beirut, where she returns on vacation to battle the Phalange and Israelis. In Melbourne she carries a pistol and fights off assassination nightmares. Ivor counsels and coaches her while himself being drawn into IT military research for the Strategic Defense Initiative (Star Wars). Privately he assists Halima with intelligence research for her militia brothers in Beirut. The success of her mission kindles both his bravado and guilt, which eventually coalesce into his secretive intelligence career while still posing as an academic.
