Being twelve years old is hard enough with your best friend beside you, but in the summer before 7th grade, Sara is riding in the passenger seat of her mom's car when a dog jumps out in front of their car. causing them to crash into a tree. One morning, Sara wakes up and her troublesome companion is nowhere to be found. Sara soon realizes that she won't be able to solve the mystery of his disappearance on her own; she’ll need help from her neglectful sister.
