His is not a name the immediately pops into the discussion of the Golden Age greats, but among his peers and the more knowledgeable in the illustration of Golden Age Comics, JIMMY THOMPSON (1907-1949) is recognized as one of the top artists and stylists of his era. Sadly, his comic career and his life were both terribly short, leading to an oversight of the value of his work and contribution to comics. JIMMY was born in Canada and honed his skills drawing one-panel cartoons (mostly sports), before heading the to United States in the late 30s and beginning a short-but-important career in comics, as an writer as well as artist. His depictions of Native Americans were considered for the day to be among the most respectful and accurate, and his drawing style was both easily recognizable and widely acclaimed – as well as applicable to many different genres, as this book proves. He produced comic stories right up to the time of his passing, so his work continued to appear for a few years after that. Not a lot of JIMMY THOMPSON'S work is public domain, but Gwandanaland and Midcentury have gathered those into the great tribute collection!
