We are in a time one thousand years after disasters due to Global Warming have set society back to a parched wasteland in medieval times, without electrical power or computing. The Purpose, a descendant of the IBM Corporation is the Church, dedicated to retaining the knowledge that will enable computer access should the "power" return. However some feel that the Purpose has lost the vision of the Founder of IBM and has ossified into an amoral institution. Various heresies and apostasies are developing around the True Faith and there is struggle and violence when the rains return and the Power returns but only to cause fire and destruction from thousand year old wires.
