Toothaches occur when the extremely sensitive central portion of the tooth called the pulp becomes inflamed. This can happen due to a variety of reasons: cavities, a blow to the tooth or an infection of the gums.
Toothache is a common reason for consulting the dentist. Pain from toothache can affect the teeth and jaws. Tooth decay is a common reason for toothache, which won't usually get better on its own. Common risk factors and health choices that may adversely affect dental health and wellness are eating disorders such as anorexia and or bulimia, dry mouth, poor oral hygiene habits, lack of flossing, heartburn (high levels of stomach acid may erode tooth enamel), smoking, chewing tobacco and underlying health problems such as medications .Since most toothaches are the result of tooth decay, following good oral hygiene practices can prevent them. Good oral hygiene consists of brushing regularly with a fluoride-containing toothpaste, flossing once a day and seeing your dentist as often as advised for check-ups and dental cleaning. In addition to these practices, eat foods low in sugar and ask your dentist about sealants and fluoride applications.
