Set in Warsaw, Poland, during the Warsaw uprising when the locals managed to keep the invading Germans at bay for 56 days, whilst the allies looked on in awe and hopefully shame, for not intervening in the conflict.
Jan Skarzynski writes using a mix of personal experience and family memories of Poland during and after the Second World War.
Despite the hardships and tragedies that inevitably unfold in his stories, he manages to capture the sesne of adventure and optimism during these very 'worst of times' when seen through the eyes of children.
