Emma Woodhouse, the novel’s heroine is, “handsome, clever, and rich." Yet these qualities are also balanced by being spoilt, wilful and overconfident. Emma is Jane Austen’s classic novel of genteel life amongst women in Regency England. Emma is a young, un-married lady who believes that she has both the knowledge and right to interfere in the love lives of others. However, she greatly overestimates her matchmaking skills and is even in danger of making a very bad match herself. Emma was first published in 1815.
