Phil Eddyvene is a sub-editor on a struggling title he professes to despise. Although a gambler, he does not usually play the Lottery, but a lucky coincidence changes his mind - he buys his first ticket and wins £10 million.
What happens next is not what he expected. Starved of good publicity and seeking a renewal of its franchise, the lottery administrator has far-reaching plans for Phil. So does his girlfriend, an ambitious reporter who smells a good story with which to launch her career.
So rather than enjoying the fruits of his good fortune Phil is buffeted by events outside his control. Up to a point. As he tries to wrest control of his life back he wonders whether winning the lottery was, in fact, the best thing that happened to him.
