Acapulco was once a favorite haunt of Hollywood stars and millionaires, and it remains one of Mexico's most famous beach resorts. Acapulco is also a major seaport and a bustling city with a long history. In pre-Columbian times, various groups of indigenous peoples, including the Olmecs, built ceremonial centers in the area. The Spanish established a settlement there during the 1500's, and Acapulco eventually became a permanent base for the Manilla galleons that carried riches from Asia. Vestiges of these influences can still be found alongside the glitzy restaurants and hotel towers that line Acapulco's sweeping bay.
