The novel Dafe for GUlsa, blending realism and magical realism, tells the story of three generations of women in an Afghanistan family, women who each carry wounds from history, society, and their personal lives. The story unfolds against the backdrop of Afghanistan’s political and social transformations, from the 1971s to around 2020, and focuses in particular on one of the bitter and unspoken events in Afghanistan’s history during the first Taliban regime. At the center of this narrative is Banu Jan, a woman who, with her red tray, serves as the storyteller and keeper of the women’s memories in her family. Salma, who later calls herself “Celine” is caught between the past and the present, struggling to redefine her identity. Hajar, a woman in Kabul, confronts the daily hardships of life, war, and the loss of her children. This novel is not merely about migration or womanhood; it reflects the consequences and culture of war.
