British Bell Records on Shellac & Vinyl: Church Bells, Tower Bells, Carillons & Handbells by Mark Jones documents all British-pressed records known to include recordings of the above types of bells. It begins with a short history of the recording of bells from 1899 (the first known bell-focussed record) covering the acoustic and electric recording of 78s, the wartime ringing ban, the decline of 78s, and the rise of LPs and 45s. Most bell records were organised by the ringing team and pressed by small regional companies, not major labels. Over 450 records are documented. 113 include significant church/tower bell content (around 50% or more), whilst 32 carillon records, and 34 handbell records are documented. Other records include minimal bell content, including sound effects records, sound stories, where bells add atmosphere, and institutional showcases, where church bells/handbells sit amongst choral and organ pieces. There are even records with ‘accidental bells’, such as Big Ben intruding in an organ piece recorded at St Margaret’s, Westminster!
